Electrical Problems Worth Calling About Early
Electrical failures give warning signs more often than mechanical ones do. Most of the items below are cheap to fix now and expensive or dangerous to ignore.

| A breaker that keeps tripping | A circuit overloaded past its rating, a failing motor or compressor drawing more than it should, or a fault in the wiring. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping is a fire risk, not a workaround. The breaker is doing its job. |
| Warm panel or a burning smell | Loose or corroded connections creating resistance and heat. This is the failure mode behind a large share of electrical fires in commercial buildings, and it is exactly what a scheduled panel and torque inspection is meant to catch before it gets this far. Call immediately. |
| Flickering or dimming on startup | Usually voltage drop when a large motor starts, which points to service capacity, a loose neutral, or a feeder that is undersized for what the building now runs. Common in buildings that added equipment without upgrading the service. |
| Equipment failing early and repeatedly | Motors, compressors and control boards that keep failing are often being fed a supply problem rather than failing on their own. Voltage imbalance on three phase equipment is a common and under-diagnosed cause. |
| Emergency lights that never get tested | Emergency and exit lighting is a life safety system with testing requirements, and battery packs fail silently. It is also one of the first things a fire inspector asks to see records for. |
| A panel nobody has labelled | Unlabelled panels turn a five minute isolation into an hour of guesswork during an emergency, and they are a safety issue for anyone working on the building. We label and document panels as part of a maintenance agreement. |

If you smell burning, see smoke or hear arcing, get people away from the panel and do not attempt to reset anything. If water is near electrical equipment, stay out of it and tell us when you call.

Are you a licensed electrical contractor in Ontario?
Yes. Postma is an ECRA/ESA licensed electrical contractor, with WSIB in good standing and full liability coverage. We pull ESA permits and arrange inspection on work that requires it. Certificates are available on request.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency electrical service?
Yes, at 519-354-9491, including weekends and holidays. Maintenance agreement customers receive priority dispatch and reduced after-hours rates.
What kind of electrical work do you focus on?
Service work on existing commercial buildings: service and panel upgrades, lighting, equipment connections, troubleshooting, generators, EV charging and safety compliance. We also handle the electrical scope attached to our own HVAC and plumbing installations, such as disconnects, feeders and breaker changes on an equipment replacement.
Our building keeps tripping breakers. What now?
Stop resetting it and call us. A breaker that trips repeatedly is either protecting you from an overloaded circuit or from a fault, and both need diagnosis rather than another reset. We find the cause, then quote the repair before the work starts.
Can you tell us whether our service can support new equipment?
Yes, and it is worth asking before you buy. We assess the existing service capacity against what you plan to add, whether that is refrigeration, production equipment or EV chargers, and tell you whether the building needs a service upgrade first. Finding that out after the equipment arrives is expensive.
Do you do LED lighting retrofits?
Yes, including high bay warehouse lighting, office and retail fixtures, parking lot and exterior lighting, and the sensors and controls that make the savings larger. On high ceiling buildings, lighting is usually one of the largest controllable operating costs.
Can electrical sit on the same maintenance agreement as HVAC and plumbing?
Yes, on one schedule and one renewal date. Panel and connection inspection, torque checks, emergency lighting testing and documented safety records can be combined with your HVAC and plumbing service. See commercial electrical maintenance.
Do you take electrical scope on new construction projects?
Our electrical division is a service department rather than a construction division, so we do not bid standalone electrical packages on new builds. We do handle the electrical work attached to our own mechanical scope on a project, and we are happy to say when a dedicated electrical contractor is the right call for the rest.
