Living Near the Sydenham
Dresden sits on a bend in the Sydenham River, and the town has dealt with flooding many times, including major floods in 1947 and 1968. If you’re adding or renovating a basement bathroom, that history matters. When we plan a basement bath in Dresden we look at:
- Where the new drain ties into your main sewer line
- Whether a backwater valve makes sense to stop sewage backing up during heavy rain
- Your sump pump and whether it can handle the extra load
- Moisture-resistant materials for walls and flooring
Common Dresden Bathroom Projects
- Converting a tub to a walk-in shower
- Adding a bathroom in the basement
- Replacing an old vanity, toilet and faucets
- Accessible bathrooms for aging in place

Dresden Bathroom Renovation FAQs
Should I put a bathroom in my basement if I live near the river?
It can be done safely in most homes. The key is protecting the new drain with a backwater valve and making sure your sump system is in good shape. We’ll check both before recommending it.
Do I need a permit?
Swapping fixtures in place usually doesn’t need one. New drains or a new basement bathroom generally do. Dresden permits come from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and we take care of the application.
